As access to cell phones and the internet has become common and an integral part of our routine, it is natural that People with Disabilities also follow this movement and are more present on the web . This increasingly active participation exposed different needs in the online world, including the elimination of several existing barriers. And that’s where digital accessibility comes in.
What is digital accessibility?
The purpose of digital accessibility is to break down the Brother cell phone list obstacles that make it impossible for people with and without disabilities to fully and effectively use web pages. This happens, for example, when we provide alternative descriptions of images so that people with visual impairments can understand the content they are browsing. It also happens when we provide subtitles on videos and people who are unable to listen to it with audio – whether for some technical reason, because they are on public transport or because they have a hearing impairment – are able to follow it.
These were just two ways that we can see digital accessibility being applied in practice, but there are hundreds of other actions that may often seem simple but make a big difference.
What is the concept of digital accessibility?
According to the Federal Government, digital accessibility is the elimination of barriers in the digital environment . The concept assumes that websites and portals are built to allow the greatest number of users to perceive, understand, navigate and interact in the virtual environment with autonomy and independence.
It is important to understand that digital accessibility does not only benefit people with disabilities and that it must be considered from the beginning of a website project, as it is much more practical and economical to build an accessible environment than to transform it along the way. . But if you already have a website and it still has some obstacles, don't worry! Because it's super possible to end them.
What is digital accessibility like in Brazil?
Even though it is a right guaranteed by law , we are still a long way from the ideal scenario of digital accessibility in our country. Article 63 of the Brazilian Inclusion Law (LBI) determines that all websites, whether from government agencies or public and private companies, are accessible to people with disabilities in Brazil, but this is not the reality we find when browsing the web. Organizations can be sued for not complying with legislation, but digital accessibility is still not always taken seriously. Some research data only proves this sad fact.
Less than 1% of Brazilian websites implement digital accessibility
In a latest study conducted by BigDataCorp , in partnership with Movimento Web para Todos, on the experience of using websites by people with some type of disability, less than 1% were considered accessible. 21 million pages were studied in the country and 99.54% showed some accessibility flaw in part of the tests applied. This data is alarming and if we were to reduce the search for accessible websites for a specific disability, these numbers would be even worse.
